The parish of St Mary's had a great day with plenty to eat, do and buy.

They raised over £5000 for the Spire restoration Fund.

Greeting Cards for Charity..

The lovely card photographed below is the initiative of Avril Williams who is a friend of the Redemptorists.

She made these cards in the hope of being able to help children in Zimbabwe, who without education could easily slide into ways that are not good.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help is on the back of the card, with the words "Keep us safe in your prayers" written.

The front of the card has space for a personal message,

ie Happy Birthday, As You Move to a New Home, or Congratulations!

On the inside cover there is verse from Joshua -

"Do not be fearful or discouraged, for wherever you go the Lord your God is with you."

The cards are priced at £1.

100% of the money given for the card will go to educating the children in Zimbabwe.

ACE OF CLUBS SCHOOLS WINTER APPEAL POSTER COMPETITION!

Children in Years 3, 4, 5, 6 at five local Lambeth primary schools (Bonneville, Clapham Manor, Heathbrook, St Mary’s and Macaulay School) were invited to design a poster publicising the Ace of Club’s winter heating appeal.

Sarah Miles, Centre Manager explained “our boiler is currently broken so centre workers, volunteers and clients have to keep hats, coats and even gloves on all day. Our antiquated heating system finally became beyond repair about 3 weeks ago and we have been struggling with small electric heaters since then. It costs approximately £5 per hour to heat the centre during opening hours so every penny donated from the local community will make a real difference to us”.

Centre volunteer, Michele Reilly, said “the pupils’ vibrant and imaginative entries have brought a whole new angle to the club’s publicity and have really boosted staff morale at the centre”.

Ace of Clubs - The Poor and Homeless of London

Speaking at a local church, Sarah Miles speaks of the Ace of Clubs in Clapham, London.

She is currently working as centre manager, welfare worker and fundraiser.

In the photo below, you see the members of Ace of Clubs receiving a gift of clothes.

"Ace of Clubs, as many of you may well know, is about 10 minutes walk away from Holy Spirit, in the old St Mary’s primary school on St Alphonsus Road. It was started 15 years ago by members of the Redemptorist Order based in the monastery next to St Mary’s. The story goes that they were starting to get a little tired of the number of people knocking on the monastery door seeking food, and that as the old St Mary’s school was empty they decided to open it as a permanent centre providing hot food and drinks every day from 8am to 7pm. St Alphonsus founded the Redemptorists with the specific mission of preaching the word of God to the poor, but all of us as Christians know that we should love one another as God loves us and this really is the basis on which the Redemptorists founded Ace of Clubs, that all people are equal and equally deserving of God’s gifts.
