Sixty years seems, and is, a life-time ago when I joined the Redemptorist family. Even before entering the novitiate I already had a sense of belonging - daily contact in St Mary's Clapham in London with Bro Gerard the sacristan; Bro Joseph the porter at the monastery door, and regular meetings in the sacristy passing the time of day or chatting with members of the large community made up of new and old Redemptorists.

Conversion of St. Paul

It would be reasonable to expect that the theme of this homily would be on today’s feast – the conversion of St. Paul. But I anticipated today’s celebration and preached on St. Paul on Sunday last.
You will be very relieved to know that I do not intend to trawl through my sixty years as a C.Ss.R – although I could make that quite racy and raise a few blushes. Perhaps later we may be given the opportunity to say a few words in another place in that respect.
So I fall back as we Redemptorists do, so often and so effectively in our preaching, on a story. And I am indebted to Tony Gittens when on the very first evening to spoke to us of the importance of LISTENING. For this is a story about listening and not just hearing.

Fifty Years
Looking back over my fifty years as a Redemptorist my overwhelming emotion is one of gratitude. It’s difficult to put into words how blessed my life has been.
Before joining the Redemptorists I worked as a professional musician, playing saxophone and clarinet in dance bands. When I decided to try my vocation as a Redemptorist, full of fervour and idealism, I sold my musical instruments telling myself that putting my musical life behind me was a sacrifice I would have to make and was willing to make. In the event it turned out that as a Redemptorist I had much more opportunity to develop my musical talents than I ever had before. As a student I was made choir master and had the opportunity not only to perform with the choir but to arrange and compose music for them.

60 years ago today (15th August) Fr Francis Dickinson C.Ss.R., knelt in the monastery chapel in Scotland and took his vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience! With his Vow and Oath of Perseverance Fr Dickinson reaches today with as much energy, enthusiasm and passion for the Gospel!
