Fr Denis McBride CSsR., Director of Redemptorist Publications was invited by the Institute of St Anselm in Rome to to give the annual retreat to the staff and the students. As you can see from the photograph, the student body is truly international and they were wonderfully welcoming. Among the students were two Redemptorist priests from the London Province: Fr Peter Morris CSsR (behind Fr Denis on his right) and Fr Victor Bushu CSsR (behind Fr Denis to his left).

Both Fr Andrew and I first met Jimmy Smale here at Bishop Eton during the Easter Week of 1960. The occasion was a Redemptorist vocations meeting for boys from all over the United Kingdom. Two years later we were to be in his company again. The occasion was the same – an Easter Week vocations meeting – but this time it was during our visit to the seminary at Hawkstone Park that we encountered Jimmy, now a professed member of the Redemptorist family and proudly clothed in his habit. Three years later we would be with him at Hawkstone as fellow students and thereafter our lives have been interwoven, until I had the privilege of being with him as he breathed his last in the early hours of the Monday, 20^th of this month, the transferred feast of St Joseph, the patron of a happy death. James deserved a happy death, and after all the struggles with his health in the past few years, those final hours were extraordinarily and unexpectedly peaceful.

On Sunday the 26th March, Fr Casper Simba Mukabva CSsR attended an Award Ceremony in Lambeth Town Hall. He was then presented with the Award, which reads,

Fr Denis McBride CSsR was invited by the English-speaking chaplains in Vienna (Anglican, Baptist, Catholic and Lutheran) to offer a series of reflection on the Passion of Jesus. He was hosted by Fr Dominic O'Toole CSsR., the Rector of the Redemptorist community in Maria am Gestade. With over 60 participants, the sessions, including The Stations of the Cross Then and Now, were  really appreciated by the ecumenical group.
