NOVENA BEFORE THE FIRST COPY OF THE ICON TO LEAVE ROME

The Redemptorists came to Liverpool in 1851 and the community of Bishop Eton has always treasured the fact that it received the first copy of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour to leave Rome in 1866.

The archives of the community record that Fr Lammeus, Secretary General, had passed through Liverpool in the February of that year and the community was so captivated by the story of the icon about to be entrusted to the Congregation that it began a novena for Fr Hall, a member of the community who was seriously ill. As a result Fr Hall was miraculously cured and in due course Bishop Eton provided the compensation paid to the Augustinian Fathers.

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Reflections

In the run up to the 2016 Novena, Fr Tim Buckley approached the local junior and secondary schools and to invite them to participate in the event. The chaplain of St. Julies, Mike Anderson produced a series of reflections that would be used within the school and on the walk of witness that St. Julie's and St Francis Xavier college undertook on the 22nd June.

Making her known - in Liverpool

In 1866 Pope Pius IX entrusted the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Succour instructing them to make her known. In the run up to the 2016 Novena in Liverpool much thought was given to how the Icon could best be brought to the attention of the local community and in particular the school children.

The Faithies 2016

Congratulations to our Redemptoristine sisters, and our Youth Ministry Coordinator Paul Murphy who have been nominated in this year’s Faithies. The Faithies are the first social media awards in Ireland to recognise those who are using social media for sharing faith and spreading the Gospel.

On Wednesday, we went to the papal audience in St Peter’s Square and had a wonderful view of the Pope passing by. He spoke to us about the Year of Mercy and the depths of compassion in the parable of the Good Samaritan. In the evening we were welcomed to the magnificent chapel of the Venerable English College, where again Cardinal Vincent celebrated the Mass, accompanied by Archbishop Peter and Bishop Ralph. The occasion was the first coming together of the two English Colleges in Rome since 1918. Of course, the other is the Beda College (where incidentally Fr Tony Hodgetts had been Vice-Rector for many years). It was a chance for some of us – priests and people – to catch up with some old friends.... to be continued...

I am confident that I speak for all who spent last week in Rome on our Pilgrimage to mark the 150th anniversary of the gift of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour to the Redemptorists, when I say that we have returned home with the sense that we were part of something very special. In the course of the week we would visit the four great basilicas of Rome and we began on the Monday evening at St Mary Major, where we celebrated our first Mass.
