Overview of Pope Francis' "Laudato si"...

pope francis laudato si The following text offers an overview of the 191 pages of the Encyclical Laudato si’ and its key points, along with a summary of each of its six chapters (“What is happening to our common home”, “The Gospel of Creation”, “The human roots of the ecological crisis”, “Integral ecology”, “Lines of approach and action”, and “Ecological education and spirituality”). The Encyclical concludes with an interreligious prayer for our earth and a Christian prayer for Creation.

“What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?” (160). This question is at the heart of Laudato si’ (May You be praised), the anticipated Encyclical on the care of the common home by Pope Francis. “This question does not have to do with the environment alone and in isolation; the issue cannot be approached piecemeal”. This leads us to ask ourselves about the meaning of existence and its values at the basis of social life: “What is the purpose of our life in this world? What is the goal of our work and all our efforts? What need does the earth have of us?” “Unless we struggle with these deeper issues – says the Pope – I do not believe that our concern for ecology will produce significant results”-.

The Encyclical takes its name from the invocation of St. Francis, “Praise be to you, my Lord”, in his Canticle of the Creatures. It reminds us that the earth, our common home “is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us”. We have forgotten that “we ourselves are dust of the earth; our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her waters.”

Pope Francis has confirmed more members and substitutes for the Fourteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops , which will take place from October 4-25, 2015, under the theme “The vocation and mission of the family in the Church and in the contemporary world.”

On 16th June 2015, the Press Office of the Holy See published the list of Members and Substitutes who have been elected by approved organisations and have been ratified by Pope Francis to attend the XIV General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops.

Among those listed are:

- Most Rev. Father Michael Brehl, C.SS.R., Superior General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) in the group representative of the Union of Superiors General.

- His Ecc. Mons. José de Queirós Alves, C.SS.R., Archbishop of Huambo (Angola) as a substitute
representative for the Episcopal Conference of Angola and Sao Tome.

The day finally arrived! The church is still radiant with the glow of our celebration of the First Holy Communion of 28 of our young people at the 11:15 Mass on 7th June. The children had been preparing for months, along with the catechetical team and the parent-volunteers — not only in their Sunday morning classes, but in the Masses where we focused especially on them.

An occasion such as this is significant on a number of levels: the children being further initiated into the life, the communion, of the Church; parents guiding their children in the ways of faith and church life; the parish community both supporting our catechetical efforts, and in turn being encouraged by witnessing each new generation of children being immersed more deeply in the Church; and last, but not least, the witness that is given to family and friends who come along, some perhaps not having much church contact themselves, but seeing a vibrant, believing community in worship and in social celebration.

Another Redemptorist at the Northern Catholic Conference...

This year at the Northern Catholic Conference many speakers came from England, Ireland and Scotland. The Redemptorist speaker was just carrying on a tradition, as last year, 2014, Fr Denis McBride CSsR addressed the Conference, and this year it was the turn of

Fr Richard Reid CSsR.

The Conference, which took place from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th of June, was a wonderful experience and many people are now back home but with spirits lifted and their prayerlife renewed!

OSsR First Profession in Thailand!...

This lovely photograph came our way the other day. It was sent to us by Sr Joan OSsR who is a Redemptoristine nun from the United States. She did work for a while, years back, on a Redemptoristine commission here in England, as is currently in the OSsR community in Thailand. Divine Providence and the Icon of Love...

On the 26 April 1866 a providential fountain of grace was opened for the universal Church when the miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour was solemnly enshrined in the Redemptorist church of St. Alphonsus in Rome. Ever since then the cleansing, sanctifying and fortifying flow of grace from Our Lady’s shrine has washed over the whole Church, bringing conversion to hardened sinners, health and wholeness to the suffering and the broken hearted, inspiration and holiness to great saints like St. Therese of Lisieux and St Pope John Paul ll, and comfort and consolation to all the faithful who invoke her powerful intercession. The miraculous Icon has truly been the Icon of Love, beaming the love of God, the love of Jesus and Our Lady’s own love into the hearts that are open to receive.

The Icon of Love, this fountain of grace, came to be enshrined in the church of St. Alphonsus, not through a series of historical coincidences, but through the will of God. The first theological observation, therefore, that we must make about the miraculous Icon is that it was clearly God’s will that the Icon would be enshrined in the church of St. Alphonsus in Rome. We see God’s providence at work in each historical event and in each person who was responsible for ensuring that Our Lady’s wish, that the Icon be venerated in the church that stood between St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran, be fulfilled

A NEW VISION OF THE REDEMPTORISTS IN THE MINISTRY OF PUBLICATIONS...

Below we offer (in video), a message and testimony of Father Ronald McAinsh CSsR, superior of the Province of London, and president of the Redemptorist Publications Committee of London, about the International Symposium for Redemptorist Publishing Houses, that took place at the Hawkstone Hall, England from 8 to 12, April, 2015.

In his own words the symposium was “a time to share about the way we work, and to share the resources and organizational skills, with the participants who came from Brazil, Poland, India, Africa and many other places of the world. A chance to learn about the plans, proposals and at the same time to understand the reality where we must carry out these projects. It is not easy but is very instructive. We were able to discuss, debate, exchange ideas in this symposium very specially because it had a common goal, to enhance the works of the publishing houses, and to collaborate within the field of Publications “.
