PERSECUTION SUFFERED BY REDEMPTORISTS IN MADRID...
1. PRESENCE OF REDEMPTORISTS IN THE CITY OF MADRID
Church S. Pascual at Po Recoletos
On February 15, 1863, three Italian Redemptorists arrived in Madrid from Barcelona (PP. Victor Loyodice and Gil Zanonni and H. Luis Zanichelli), to establish the Congregation of the Blessed Redeemer in Spain. They were invited by the Madrid priest D. Andrés Martínez Novoa, Coadjutor of the Parish of S. Sebastián on Atocha Street; he took care of all the preparations, and in his house, located at the back of the parish, they stayed until October 11, 1863 when the first Redemptorist Community of Spain was created in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid).

The Redemptorist Missionaries settled again in Madrid in 1869, seeking refuge from the persecution suffered in their Spanish homes during the revolution of 1868. Pilgrimage through several houses in Madrid, they went to settle in 1870 next to the church of S. Pascual, on Paseo Recoletos. They remained there until in 1879 Cardinal Moreno granted them the Church of Santa Bárbara, then called de las Salesas. This was the first canonical residence that the children of S. Alfonso had in Madrid. In it they remained until in 1892 when the Redemptorists opened two residences in the capital of Spain.

Echalecu is a small town and capital of the Navarre Valley of Imoz. There, in the Zapatañenea house, located on Calle de San Esteban, lived at number 19 a Basque-speaking couple of farmers, called by Miguel Francisco Erviti Erviti and Micaela Insausti Nuín; he was from the same town; she from the neighboring town of Muzquiz.

New Spanish CSsR Martyrs...

On October 22nd of this year, we will celebrate, in the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, the Beatification of Fr. Vicente Renuncio Toribio C.Ss.R. and companions martyrs. In total, twelve confreres of our Redemptorist charism. The ceremony will be presided over by the Cardinal Prefect for the Causes of Saints, Marcello Semeraro.
The twelve martyrs, six priests and six coadjutor brothers, members of the two Redemptorist communities of Perpetual Help and Saint Michael the Archangel in Madrid, were all assassinated between July 20 and November 7, 1936, at the beginning of the bloody religious persecution that took place in Spain until 1939.
