Prayer by St Alphonsus

Most holy Virgin Immaculate,
my Mother Mary,
to you who are the Mother of my Lord,
the Queen of the Universe,
the Advocate,
the hope,
the refuge of sinners,
I who am the most miserable of all sinners,
have recourse this day.
I venerate you,
great queen,
and I thank you for the many graces
you have bestowed upon me
even unto this day;

I love you, my dearest Lady;
and because of that love,
I promise to serve you willingly for ever
and to do what I can
to make you loved by others also.

I place in you all my hopes for salvation;
accept me as your servant
and shelter me under your mantle,
you who are the Mother of Mercy.

And since you are so powerful with God,
deliver me from all temptations,
or at least obtain for me
the strength to overcome them until death.

From you I implore a true love for Jesus Christ.

Through you I hope to die a holy death.

My dear Mother,
by your love for Almighty God,
I pray you to assist me always,
but most of all at the last moment of my life.

Forsake me not then,
until you shall see me safe in heaven,
there to bless you
and sing of your mercies through all eternity.

Such is my hope.
Amen

Goodbye 2020, Welcome 2021...

It has been a strange and bizarre year, of that no one can have any doubt. In a short time we will say farewell to the year that is ending and a rousing welcome to the year now approaching.

Let us never forget to say thanks to our God for the many good things that happened this year, things that we perhaps take for granted; the weather, the sun shine, fresh air, water, our memories, good people close by or far away, etc. We have indeed been blessed in many ways during 2020, and we have had a few trying moments as well! Let us read the poem that King George VI made famous in 1939... and welcome the year 2021 by putting our "hand into the Hand of God."

gate 2021

The Gate of the Year

‘God Knows'

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.
And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

So heart be still:
What need our little life
Our human life to know,

If God hath comprehension?
In all the dizzy strife
Of things both high and low,
God hideth His intention.

God knows. His will
Is best. The stretch of years
Which wind ahead, so dim
To our imperfect vision,
Are clear to God. Our fears
Are premature; In Him,
All time hath full provision.

Then rest: until
God moves to lift the veil
From our impatient eyes,
When, as the sweeter features
Of Life’s stern face we hail,
Fair beyond all surmise
God’s thought around His creatures
Our mind shall fill.

Sr Stacey in the habit of her former Congregation

Our Sisters the Redemptoristine Nuns in Dublin received a new sister into their community this evening on the Feast of the Presentation. Sr Stacey has been a finally professed member of another Congregaiton and after much discernment she heard a call within a call. With the permission of her Superior General she received permission to follow her vocation as a Redemptoristine Nun. Let us pray for Sr Stacey as she begins this new journey. Pray for all our Redemptoristine Sisters as they definitely pray for us, their "little" brothers!

Follow them for prayer on their webcam rednuns.com

One Body...

For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into ONE BODY (1 Cor. 12:13).

The Congregation unites members who

live together and form one missionary body (C.2).

"ONE BODY is prepared for community prayer and reflection, but it can also be used by individual confreres, lay missionaries and associates, groups and individuals. We ask you to make it available to Sisters and lay men and women who would benefit from its reflections." Fr General CSsR wrote this explaining what One Body represents.

They left but are still a part of family...

Our brothers in Zimbabwe at the cemetery remembering our dead.

It is often said that the dead rule Africa. That is, of course, an overstatement. However, there in Africa enormous respect for the ancestors as well as a real influence exerted by them. They are a very natural and supernatural part of the family.  We grow up in real communion with our ancestors.

Therefore when we celebrate the feasts of All Saints and All Souls, there is a very large community celebration in which families come together.

Here in Zimbabwe, the parish Mass on the first Sunday of November is celebrated where possible in the local cemetery, and then afterward, each of the family graves is blessed. It is a long and at this time of the year a very hot ceremony, but it means so much to the people of the country.

For the Redemptorists, as well as participating in the parish celebrations, we visit the graves of our own deceased Redemptorists. There are only a few, and these are confreres who came up from South Africa over 40 years ago and ministered in many parts of this country.

So each November, members of our communities in the Region of Zimbabwe go to these graves and pray in thanksgiving for the labours of our Redemptorist ancestors and also for their eternal repose.  Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Brother Benjamin T. Posvo, C.Ss.R.

CSsR 288th Birthday - 9th November date of Foundation...

On November 9, 1732, in his beloved Scala, St. Alphonsus Liguori founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer to follow the example of our Savior Jesus Christ announcing the Good News to the poor. He was 36 years old. His life became one of mission and service to the most abandoned. Pope Benedict XIV approved the Congregation on February 25, 1749.

Watch the message of Fr. Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R., Superior General, on the occasion of Redemptorist Missionary Vocation Day and the Foundation Day.

Alphonsus, with his companions, among whom St. Gerard Majella was outstanding, strove to come to the relief of the spiritual needs, at that time, of the poor of the country districts. These he sought to assist, especially by means of missions, spiritual exercises, and renewals, after the manner of St. Paul (Acts 15,36). – it is how the origins of the Congregation are described in the historical preface to the Constitutions and Statutes of the Redemptorists.

Redemptorist Missionaries continue the charism of Alphonsus in the Church and society. “Strong in faith, rejoicing in hope, burning with charity, on fire with zeal, in the humility of heart and persevering in prayer, Redemptorists as apostolic men and genuine disciples of Saint Alphonsus follow Christ the Redeemer with hearts full of joy; denying themselves and always ready to undertake what is demanding and challenging, they share in the mystery of Christ and proclaim it in Gospel simplicity of life and language, that they may bring to people Plentiful Redemption” (Redemptorist Constitutions, No. 20).
