EUCHARIST AND SAINT ALPHONSUS

multi onseethroughFrTimCSsRIn the run-up to Adoremus 2018, the Maryton Carmelite convent in Liverpool is running a series of talks. on the 27th May Fr Tim Buckley C.Ss.R was honoured to speak on the Eucharist and St Alphonsus. So that you may get a flavour of his talk the majority is reproduced below

Last weekend at the Royal Wedding in Windsor we had a remarkable demonstration of the power of the preached Word of God. I cannot remember a Christian sermon receiving such universal acclaim across the religious, political and social spectrums. And for me, what was most striking was the simplicity of the message, going to the heart of the Gospel of love. Bishop Michael Curry had been flown in especially for the occasion and some suggested that he stole the show and was the ‘man of the match’.

Fr McManus CSsR and Pope Francis...

Missionaries of Mercy

During the Holy Year of Mercy, on Ash Wednesday 2016, Pope Francis commissioned 900 priests from around the world to be Missionaries of Mercy. They were recommended by their bishops or their Provincials or Generals. He shared with us his own faculties for celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation and encouraged us to make the mercy of God known to the whole Church and the world.

The Missionaries of Mercy were invited back to Rome to concelebrate Mass with the Holy Father on the feast of Divine Mercy, the  Sunday after Easter and to have a  three day conference on the Mercy of God in the Vatican. Pope Francis spent the morning of 10 April with us. He gave us a very moving  talk on how we as Missionaries of Mercy should witness to the Mercy of God the Father in all circumstances.  He reminded us of the mandate he had entrusted to us with these words: “We must acknowledge that God’s mercy knows no bounds, and with your ministry, you are a concrete sign that the Church cannot, must not and does not wish to create any barrier or difficulty that may hinder access to the Father’s forgiveness. The “prodigal son” did not have to pass through customs: he was welcomed by the Father, without obstacles”.

Br Richard CSsR - his loving Mother RIP...

Mom’s death: Brother Richard Maidwell, C.Ss.R.

Today my sister Kay and I laid our Mother to rest in Alton Cemetery after a Requiem Mass celebrated in our Chawton house chapel by Fr Denis McBride, C.Ss.R.

Mom had been living in Alton in Brendoncare Nursing Home for the past 4 years. Prior to that she lived in Bighton with my sister after coming to England from Zimbabwe where she lived most of her life. She was born in Poona, India, but left with her parents as a little girl. In Bulawayo Zimbabwe Mom met Ambrose Maidwell, my Father, where they married in December 1940.

They had three children. Roy and Keith, and then a good few years later, myself. Mom’s married life was devoted to her husband, children, home and garden. She was a loving caring woman who loved animals especially dogs and was an active member of the SPCA for many years.

After Dad died Mom moved into a retirement home and a few years later married Jack Allam. They were together just 4 years when Jack died. Eventually Mom moved to England in 2011 and settled here with Kay, my eldest brother’s wife, my brother Roy having died 20 years earlier.

Mom died at the nursing home on Holy Saturday at 21:30. May she rest in peace.
